States Trying to Slow Antipsychotic Prescriptions to Children

A recent article in the online magazine Mad In America noted that many states are attempting to slow the number of prescriptions to children of antipsychotic medications.

A widespread tactic, according to the article, is some kind of “prior authorization” requirement.

The article noted that researchers have found that 31 states have implemented prior authorization policies within the last five years. The report’s authors suggest an examination of the effects of the policies in order to determine unintended consequences.
